For instance, while I believe it is true that it is better to †turn the other cheek†, we must not forget that there are several instances in the Bible where justice had to be meted out in order to maintain order. I believe that there are things that have been misinterpreted in the Bible and that good people believing people have taken things out of context. One of these is the death penalty. First, you have the commandment that says â€Å"Thou Shall Not Kill†. However, some strong supporters of the Bible believe in the death penalty. I believe that â€Å"Thou Shall Not Kill† means thou shall not kill period. And when the argument comes up, I try to explain that killing is killing and none of it is what God wants. That even though there are individuals who commit terrible crimes against humanity, killing them should not be in the arsenal of those who mete out justice. Imprisonment should be used for those individuals who have been convicted of serious crimes. And as is the case, this type of justice is never handed out fairly. In our society, the rich have a great advantage over the poor in how they are treated by the justice systems. There have been many men executed for crimes they were not guilty of. There is no recourse when this happens. There is no way to make the right with that man, or his family. His life is gone forever and all the apologies in the world can’t bring him back to a normal lifestyle. I try to explain that even Jesus Himself was given the death penalty wrongly. Nothing that anyone could do would undo that injustice He received. This is just one example of why the death penalty, though it was been carried out in the Bible, isn’t worth it. I agree with what Reverend Martin Luther King Jr. once said, †An eye for an eye just leaves everybody blind†. There are some things in the Bible that are timeless. Some of those things include, love your neighbor as you love yourself, do not desire your neighbor’s goods, honor thy mother and father and above all else, thou shall have no other gods before Me. If one keeps this commandment, I think that he has shown a common sense that will be appreciated in the end by The Great Judge of all mankind. In my personal experience, I’ve found that a true belief in my faith has brought me from serious life issues. My steadfast belief is that what I pray for, as long as it in within reason, I will receive. It’s happened in my life over and over again. I have learned through trials that when you pray for something and it doesn’t come to pass, you are not to be deterred in your belief. If you are, then you were never really as seriously committed to your belief. I have found that ii is quite effective to pray and say â€Å"if it be your will†, please let it be. We cannot determine what God wants to happen, we can only pray that we desire coincides with God’s plan. In keeping the faith, we can go ahead and accept the outcome of situations that we are not in control of. We must keep on believing in spite of whatever answers we receive. We must keep on worshiping God and we must not be deterred because that specific prayer we prayed didn’t come to the conclusion we desired. Often times, down the road, we find that the best results were not to have our prayers answered in the manner we desired. We find that the person we prayed would be with us has turned out to be someone that we should never have been with in the first place. We find out that the job we prayed for end up being cancelled. One of the most difficult parts of having faith is when we pray for healing for ourselves or a loved one. It is great to pray that God heals the sick but what I believe is that all suffering is redemptive. That there is a reason God allows people to have difficult experiences. There has been gods worshipped in Mayan temples, jungle woods, and even many of the pagan tribes. The one thing that all of these societies have in common is a faith. Now, whether that faith is within our realm of reason is for us as individuals to decide. I contend that there is a divine spirit which can be called upon for support when needed and there are times when the intervention of these deities could actually be felt by the worshipper. I believe that no other God exist other than the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob and that God has given grace to those ignorant tribes who have yet to be enlightened. I also believe there is more than one way to worship and I do believe that it is quite reasonable to believe in an all controlling God who sees all, plans all, yet still allows man to have free will. It takes people vision to find solution to every problem. There are things that have been left to imagination. One of them would be to imagine how heaven would be. There have been many descriptions of what that place we call heaven would be like. Only our imagination determines just how beautiful a place that would be. All people imagine things. Beforehand, Tony never questioned his faith but as each person died Tony turned farther and farther away from Catholicism and eventually even away from the pagan religion. Tony doubts his abilities as a priest, even though he is not one, because his mother dreams for him to become a priest. Subsequently, he believes that he should have been able to save Lupito s soul from wandering the river, because he will one day be required to. Whereas, A priest could have saved Lupito. (23), Tony feels guilty that he wasn t able to fulfill his duty even though it wasn t his. This shows that the destiny at first laid out by Catholicism may not be the one that is best suited to Tony. By not saving Lupito or his soul, the town Tony lives in is no longer pure in his eyes. The river is the lifeline of the town and once it is stained then the town will also be tainted with the murder of Lupito. Tony asks, How would I ever wash away the stain of blood from the sweet waters of my river! (23), and in doing so also questions why God puts such obstacles in the paths of innocent people. The Catholic God, it seems, is cruel and not as perfect as possibly believed. By growing up and becoming a man, boys witness acts of sin and commit a few acts themselves. Tony has witnessed sin but he is not a man because he has not committed any sins or seen enough to really understand the world he is living in. As Tony is jolted by the death of Narciso he doubts whether God exists and in doing so questions whether his beliefs of God have ever been justified. Tony s final spiritual step has him questioning whether there really is a God because the religions he knows seem to be based on gods who don t reply. Tony s faith is being destroyed by the realization that the old gods and their religions are dying. God and the golden carp are both old gods and when they are gone Tony has nothing left to believe in because there will be no god. In Tony s dream, he believes The old gods are dying†¦ (244) because he sees Cico kill the golden carp, whereas in real life Cico was like a preacher of the golden carp. The death of the gods confirms the idea that religions come and go and therefore no religion is right. Also, if there is no God in heaven to bear Tony s burden then Tony must bear it himself and he cannot live with the thought of what men do. Men, while powerless and insignificant, create so many problems that they can t solve and, like Tony, they need a God to help bear the burden. If there is †¦ no God in heaven to bear my burden†¦ (243) then Tony must bear the weight of the towns sins on his shoulders. As a result any religion that would put such weight on one person can t be the right religion. Tony once believed in the powers of God and he then learned that God did not always forgive and he could be cruel and mean. Narciso s death showed Tony that God could not forgive because then he would have to forgive everyone and Tony could not accept that. After seeing the golden carp Tony believed in the carp as a possible god, but Florence s drowning in the home of that god shattered that perfect vision. The golden carp should have been able to save Florence, but he didn t, so Tony no longer could believe in the golden carp as a shining example of a god. All humans must change and because they must, the world they live in, including their religions, must change with them or be lost in time. The Catholic religion failed to change into what Tony needed, and so did the pagan religion, so he stopped belieiving in them; however he saw Ultima s religion as a new unchartered way that he could create himself. At the end of Tony s spiritual journey he finds himself lost in a world that is prophesied to end and without a true belief in anything.

For example if the government spends deficit money on new highways, trucking will benefit and more jobs will be produced. When an economic system is in recession all of its resources are not being used. For example if the government did not build highways we could not ship goods and there would be less demand for them. The supply remains low even though we have the ability to produce more because we cannot ship them. This non-productivity comes at a cost to the whole economic system. If deficit spending eliminates non-productivity then its direct monetary cost will be offset if not surpassed by increased productivity. This is as disturbing as it is surprising and ensures that the audience will leave the auditorium in a state of real shock The Inspector is a very mysterious character, as we do not know much about him. The word Inspector suggests someone who looks closely at things, and this is his role in the events of the play. The name Goole sounds like ghoul someone with a morbid interest in death, a spirit that is said to take fresh life from corpses, and it is certainly arguable that the Inspectors existence is a result of Eva Smiths death. I think that Priestley has deliberately called the Inspector Goole to create an esoteric image and make the audience feel tense when they listen to the Inspector on stage. He does not forgive what the Birlings have done, but when they freely admit their faults he allows them to see that they can find forgiveness through future good behaviour. His approach has been perhaps too abrasive, and he is clearly someone for whom social conventions count for nothing when weighed against the desire for truth and justice. Priestley has written a typical play that has a villain and a hero. Most of the audience would definitely like the hero, in this case the Inspector, whereas they would be against the villains, the members of the Birling family. The play is set in Edwardian times where society was strictly divided into social classes and over two-thirds of the nations wealth was in the hands of less than one percent of the population. Below the very rich were the middle classes. For example the doctors and merchants, shop workers and clerks. After this came the craftsmen and skilled workers. At the very bottom of the social ladder was the largest class of all the ordinary workers and the poor, many of whom lived below the poverty level. The men of industry treated the workers very badly and they were paid a pittance. This caused workers to become better organised and strikes were becoming more frequent as they demanded better conditions and higher pay. Priestley was writing the play for a middle class audience and was trying to speak up for the working class by showing how the Birlings and Gerald Croft were all involved in making a young working class girls life a misery. Priestley wants to show us that we have a responsibility to others to act fairly and without prejudice and that we do not live in isolation. He shows that our actions affect others when the Inspector says:  millions of Eva Smiths and John Smiths still left with us, with their lives, their hopes and fears, their suffering and chance of happiness, all intertwined with our lives and what we think and say and do. We have to confront our mistakes and learn from them. Through the Inspector acting as our conscience we are made aware that there are those in higher positions in society who have power yet abuse it. They take advantage of those weaker than themselves. Eva Smith was a working class girl trying to make a living. Through those in power she was used terribly, then when she was no longer of any use she was got rid of. JB Priestley wanted to show that this would continue to happen if society does not learn from these mistakes made. The audience feels sympathy towards Eva Smith and is curious to see if the Birlings have learnt from their mistake. Priestley has shown us how middle class people act in society and the way in which they regard lower citizens. He hopes we will realise how the younger generations are the ones who can change the society in which we live. He shows this when Mr and Mrs Birling learn nothing from their mistakes whereas Eric and Sheila do. The Inspector brings the play to a close, summarising Priestleys message when he says We dont live alone. We are members of one body. We are responsible for each other exactly the opposite to what we are told to believe by Mr Birling, that everybody should look after themselves. Priestley conveys his message well, showing us how the situation can be changed and who to depend on to change it.  I think the success and popularity of An Inspector Calls accounted for by the fact that it is very entertaining as there is a mixture of suspense and mystery but is also a play that conveys a moral message. This makes the play appeal to a widest possible audience especially the middlebrow.

These ten words have shifted their senses over the years. In some cases, we are wise to likewise be flexible; in others, we relax our vocabulary at the expense of useful distinctions: 1. Decimate The literal meaning of this word, as all you lovers of Latin (not to be confused with Latin lovers) know all too well, is â€Å"to reduce by one-tenth,† supposedly from the punitive custom of selecting one out of ten captives by lot and killing those so selected. But the senses for this rhadamanthine Roman policy have proliferated, so that now it means â€Å"tithed,† â€Å"drastically reduced,† or â€Å"destroyed† as well. 2. Disinterested Commonly employed to mean â€Å"not interested,† disinterested has a precise, useful meaning of â€Å"neutral, unbiased.† 3. Enormity Some people would reserve this word to mean â€Å"monstrously wicked,† but, in truth, it is properly invoked to refer to anything overwhelming or an unexpected event of great magnitude, and thus it need not be invariably corrected to enormousness except when it is clearly in reference to a loathsome occurrence. Refrain, however, from diluting the word’s impact in such usage as â€Å"The enormity of the new stadium struck them as they approached the towering entrance.† 4. Fortuitous This word means â€Å"occurring by chance,† but its resemblance to fortune has given it an adopted sense of â€Å"lucky.† For meticulous adherence to the traditional meaning, use fortuitous only in the sense indicated in this sentence: â€Å"His arrival at that moment was fortuitous, because her note had not specified the exact time of her departure.† Nothing in the context qualifies his arrival as fortunate; the sentence merely states that he arrived in time without knowing that he would do so. The informal meaning is expressed here: â€Å"His fortuitous arrival at that very moment enabled him to intercept the incriminating letter.† In this sentence, the time of his appearance is identified as a lucky stroke. 5. Fulsome This term originally meant â€Å"abundant, generous, full,† but that sense was rendered obsolete when the word acquired a negative connotation of â€Å"offensive, excessive, effusive.† Conservative descriptivists rail against the use of fulsome in a positive sense, but the cold, hard fact is that this sense has been increasingly resurgent for many years, and the adulatory meaning is now much more common than the condemnatory one. If you wish to stand fast before the tsunami of inevitability, be my guest, but fulsome as an exquisite insult has been consigned to the dustbin of history. Some commentators recommend that because of the word’s ambiguity, it’s best to avoid its use altogether. If you insist, make sure the context is clear. 6. Ironic The impact of ironic has been diluted because many people use it to mean â€Å"coincidental,† when its traditional definition is â€Å"counter to expectations or what is appropriate.† 7. Literally Some folks get exercised when this term is used in place of its antonym, figuratively. However, in a hyperbolic sense, that meaning is justified. Unfortunately, that sense is literally overused. 8. Notorious This term is occasionally used in a neutral sense, but that’s not an error, but the word literally means â€Å"known.† However, its dominant connotation is that the fame is a result of infamy. 9. Peruse This victim of definition reversal literally means â€Å"to use thoroughly,† and its first sense is that of careful steady or attentive reading. However, many writers (myself included) have employed it as a synonym for scan enough writers, as a matter of fact, that its second sense is â€Å"to look over or through in a casual or cursory manner. Unfortunately, these mirror meanings mean that if you use the word, I advise you to support it with context that clarifies the intended sense. 10. Plethora Plethora originally referred to an excess of something, but that usage is rare now, and more often the sense is simply of abundance.
